I think this would clear a lot of his mental instability. To think of how much firepower it took to drop one of these bears down (.40 cal--worthless but two 12 gauge shotguns most likely with 3 and a half inch magnum slugs at five shots each) in your story really makes me wonder how much of a chance you would have under any circumstances.

With all animals I suspect the bear included, would want to check out where those sexual moans and groans were coming from. This assumed expertise is a key reason for his cavalier attitude and complacency among bears, not to mention the stupidity of putting his tent and camp(s) on bear trails, particularly to and from feeding areas. During this period, Tim’s cries and pleadings can be heard for two-thirds of that time. Admire them, but respect their needs and distance. A photographer in Denali National Park, a few years ago, was chased down and killed by a solo grizzly that he'd been filming -- from more than 100 yards distance from the bear; and he had been there at that site, photographing/ filming the bear for a very short time (under an hour) prior to the bear charging and killing him. This really reminds me of Steve Irwin.. and so I kept thinking about it all day all night. I spent a career in law enforcement and I have investigated many deaths. He was nothing more than a midnight snack! But don't go looking for them and for God's sake make your encounter brief. If Tim did provide basic information on visitor use, boat and plane traffic, as well as weather information, I would argue that it was more in passing during incidental conversation, and not with official record keeping.
